My new tablet - SmartQ X7 7" Jellybean

Finally got my new tablet today. It is a SmartQ X7 7 inch Android Jellybean Tablet.

Stock photos because I suck at cameras.

Specs:

  • Android 4.1.2 Jellybean
  • Dual-core TI OMAP 4470, ARM Cortex-A9 1.5 GHz CPU
  • Quad-core GPU PowerVR SGX 544
  • 2 GB DDR2 RAM
  • 16 GB onboard flash storage
  • MicroSD card slot (supports up to 32 GB cards)
  • Google Play store
  • 7" IPS 1280 X 800 pixel 10-point multitouch screen (180° viewing angle)
  • mini-HDMI out
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • USB OTG
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • 2 MP Cameras front and back
  • FM radio receiver and transmitter
  • Gravity sensor
  • Three-axis accelerometer
  • Hardware 1080P video decoding
  • 3D graphics acceleration
  • Flash 11.1

So it can do pretty much anything a tablet can do these days - 3d video games with bluetooth controllers, HD movies on the big screen, GPS, Radio, eReader, I can plug in a keyboard and mouse and use it like a netbook, add an HDMI monitor and make it a desktop...

There's no built-in 3G or 4G, but I have a mobile hot spot, so I can Skype or Google voice from anywhere with a cell signal.  Plus it supports USB dongles... so I could do that.

There's no Near field communication (NFC) or InfraRed, and there's no projector... But it has everything else.

Oh yes, tablets do come with built-in projectors now.

I got my SmartQ X7 for $250 shipped (it was on sale) from smartqme.com.

sadly the GPS appears to be pretty weak and for me and others ("agm" on the smartq forums), very difficult to get a fix. I have tried GPSfix app but that did not help. I think that perhaps it may be simply because it has a metal case and the GPS antenna is not getting through. Cheaper tablets in plastic, such as the freelander PD10 in some of its 8 versions are rumoured to have better (although not ideal) GPS. If you know a way of improving GPS please let me know. There is a guy on a Freelander related forum who soldered a GPS antenna inside his Freelander tablet. I think that there is a lot less space inside the slinky slim smartq x7 box.

Also I am having a problem turning bluetooth on. Using the right start button (to use windows terminology) I can turn bluetooth to "ON" but it it does not glow blue in the same menu and clicking on the bluetooth line opens a bluetooth settings screen where it says bluetooth is off and "turning on blue tooth" forever.

Bluetooth does work doesn't it?

I have turned off airplane mode.

By the way, as "agm" points out, in some vanilla versions of the rom, or the "Comod" rom by "andropos" (all google-able, I think) the telephony files are still in the system and these use a lot of battery even though there is no SIM port and no hope of telephony. The solution is to upgrade the OS, rename the relevant .apk files in the system folder, or in the interim (I am still in the interim!) use airplane mode.

I haven't had any problem with the GPS or the BlueTooth. But I haven't used either very extensively yet.

The only device I have to compare it to is my Acer A100 - which suffered a very unfortunate smashing incident on its screen. From what I can tell so far, it works just as well as the Acer did. Maybe I got lucky? IDK

i will say I had to uninstall and reinstall the Google Maps program in order to download maps for offline use.

Thank you for the thoughts and the tips. I appreciate the insight!
