Review: Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition - PS3

Article first published as PlayStation 3 Review: Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition on Blogcritics.

Test your might. Fight!

I love hearing those words. I remember hours spent playing the original Mortal Kombat on the SNES. The Fatalities, the Kombos, the interactive environments, the character juggling, the tower of enemies... It was such an innovation. I was the first of my friends to see the movie when it came out way back in 1995, and I even loved the soundtrack from that movie.

But over the years, I've lost touch with my old friend MK. And I don't think I'm alone in that. The reborn Mortal Kombat (2011) came out last year, and rebooted the franchise. Not only did it reboot the storyline, but it returned MK to its 2D fighting roots. It was met with praise from critics and gamers alike. Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition is the GOTY edition with the DLC included, and some even more bonus extras, like an HD digital download copy of the 1995 film for your PS3c and a download of an album of music inspired by the fighters for your PC.  They even revamped some of the online play to answer some of the complaints about last year's release, but were sure to make it backwards compatible with its predecessor.

But - does it work?  Is it worth it?  I would say if you already have MK 2011, just get the DLC, don't buy the game again.  But if you are at all into Mortal Kombat, even if it's been over a decade since you've played--or if you are into fighters at all--then this game is worth your purchase.  The Story Mode is well worth the play through, it introduces you to many of the main characters, and lets you play as most of them.  There are plenty of modes, characters, and costumes to unlock, combos, Fatalities, and moves to learn.  Many, many hours of good clean ultra-violent fun to be had by all.

Points for balancing nostalgia with fresh graphics and game play.  This game truly has it all.

Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition is rated M (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language. This game can also be found on: Xbox 360.
